Review: Clay - Clay:List EP

Ooooh this sounds familiar! Pressing play on the EP Clay:List, we are at once embraced by the sweet notes of a well-known riddim. Late Than Never is a prime example of Clay's songwriting skills (he even manages to relate his song to its underlying Brighter Days theme) and his ability to adapt to any riddim as if it was tailor-made for him.

Take the next song, for instance. A Jr. Blender remix of So Much Trouble is the base for Clean Hands Pure Heart, a plea for righteous livity and more realness in human encounters: "I see you for the person you are." The freshly appointed head of Major Lazer's production team is also responsible for the Stars Riddim relick. It serves as the elaborate stage on which Still The Same unfolds splendidly, blossoming into a touching love song that is bound to leave you goose-bumped, teary-eyed or both.

Another Silly Walks gem, Love And Be Loved on the Ram Jam Riddim is bringing the singer's vocal qualities to the fore – if anyone poses a serious threat to the title of "Mr. Singy Singy", it's Clay. Tarrus beware!

With One Day, we unfortunately reach the end of this Clay:List already (and if I'd be pressed to criticise anything at all, it would be this – not enough!). Produced by the artist himself and a little help of S. Blagrove (Big Dreams Production), it is an encouragement for all those whose loving someone is not returned. As they say, good things come to those who wait!

For you, there is really no need to refrain from purchasing the EP to sweeten up your summer. Clay and the Silly Walks Discotheque producers teamed up to deliver this piece of cake just prior to the planned debut album later this year: "Because of the high productivity of the artist and the fact that some of his great songs are performed on digitally programmed riddims and therefore don’t match the all-live-instrument concept of the album, we decided to bundle these songs and release them now."

Good decision made! And now it's up to you to familiarize yourself with the sound of Clay, as he is definitely here to stay and there's a lot more coming.
