EP Review: Million Stylez - Light Up

by Gardy Stein
Sweden's Reggae- & Dancehall star Million Stylez hits again: with a brand-new EP entitled Light Up, the artist adds to his already impressive discography. Released on his own label Adonai Music, the five tracks included revolve around Girls and Ganja, the latter undeniably indicated by the cover artwork. But don't you worry – for all those who intend to airplay the tracks or plan a listening session with the parents-in-law, there are three clean version included!
The EP has been produced, recorded and mixed by Aaron Prado of Zion Productions in Costa Rica, while the mastering remained in Sweden: Sören Von Malmborg of Cosmos Mastering is the one who blended vocals and riddims to the finished product.
The first three pieces are clearly aimed at a club audience. Clean beats and digital effects dominate the dancehallish riddims that will no doubt make people dance and party hard, thus both Light Up and Nice And Round don't need to be (and are not) lyrical revelations. Smoke We A Smoke, on the other hand, is a bit laid-back and impresses with more challenging lyrics. For the first time ever, I hear the term "Ible", translating the Holy Book into typical Rasta-talk.
On the Reggae side of things, I Just Want To Know You is a sentimental declaration of love to a girl met in the club - a belated Valentine's gift to the ladies! An exception to the above mentioned thematic focus is the calm Lost Friends, a pensive tune dedicated to "the friends that I lost" which has been released on the album Revelation Time already. With it, the EP Light Up closes, leaving us with a smile on the face and an itch in the legs. Make sure you dance it all off!
